  • LONGEVITY: DNA or DLN?

Most everyone knows something about DNA ( Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid). DNA is our genetic blueprint; our instructions for development. It determines our physical traits and our biological strengths and weaknesses. We see people aging well and we attribute it to “good genes” and blame many health conditions on “bad genes”.

An emerging trend in medicine involves assessing an individual’s genetics and matching up a medication based on the results. We hear genetic references appearing in medical diagnoses such as “Breast Cancer her-2 negative gene”. We are told many of our health conditions are genetic and therefore biologically fated and beyond our control.

A similar trend is showing up in the nutritional field. Practitioners are analyzing certain genes, looking for flaws and then building diet and supplement protocols based on the results. In other words, our DNA is our biological destiny and by nourishing our genes we improve health and longevity. This all comes across as a very scientific, data driven, cutting-edge strategy.

As nicely wrapped up as that all sounds, the reality of all this is much more complex. In 1865, Gregor Mendel began mapping out gene expression by cross-breeding green pea plants with yellow pea plants. He observed a fairly consistent pattern of the green peas and yellow peas showing up in the pattern of the progeny. This laid the groundwork for the “one gene– one trait” theory. What most folks don’t consider is that there are about a dozen shades each of green and yellow peas. Mendel bred them out to one shade each which led to a misleadingly simple conclusion.

Are you familiar of the board game named Plinko? Here is a picture of the basic set up:

    basic Plinko board game

One drops a ball at the top, it bounces off of the obstacles, and randomly lands in a slot at the bottom that is associated with a score or a prize.. In the same way that the manner in which the ball is dropped and how it may ricochet off of the obstacles affects where the ball lands, many genes collaborate to result in a particular trait.

This genetic expression by multiple genes is much more complex than the pictured Plinko board. Look at this picture of a teacher creating his own Plinko board:

    advanced Plinko board game

This is perhaps a better illustration of the many genes that ultimately result in a single gene expression. There are certain genes that seem to almost always result in a predictable trait as the pathway of the contributing genes is well worn: but it’s never 100%.

To fully understand the significance of the conclusion to which this article is heading, we need to draw a distinction between a complicated system and a complex system. Your cell phone is complicated. Very few of us could build one. Yet someone understands each part of the phone, and a few people may understand all of the parts. However complicated, this system is predictable as you know what result you will get from your input.

A complex system is unpredictable. It is impossible to predict all of the ramifications of any input. Genetics is a complex system. So is Human Biology and Psychology. This is why the study of our genes will yield useful data, but will never give us a completely reliable roadmap to our Longevity or our medicines.

It is also important to understand that there is another factor that disrupts the idea of a nice, neat linear understanding of genetics: epigenetics. This is a system where information from your outer an inner environment is synthesized and communicated to your DNA by mRNA messengers. This is what truly determines what genes are turned off or on and what they actually do.

This should make it clear that health and longevity have less to do with DNA and everything to do with DLN. In case you were wondering, DLN stands for Diet, Lifestyle, and Nutrition. The simple equation for health and longevity is less toxins and more nutrition.

With that in mind, choose a lifestyle that includes deep sleep, hydration, activity, and time in Nature. Do your best to eliminate your exposure to as many toxins as possible. We don’t always have a choice, but when you do, make a good one.

Making good dietary choices can be overwhelming as there are so many competing ideas from so many “experts”. We are complex individuals and there is no one single dietary approach that perfectly suits everyone. But whatever food strategy you adopt, focus on clean food: chemical-free and unprocessed. Only nutrients have the inherent complexity to operate in our complex human biology with few adverse consequences.

It should be noted that one of the major shortcomings of the medical model is that people who are good with complicated systems have the arrogance to believe that they can predict the complex system of human biology. Medications have their place. But Big Pharma has a lot to learn from Mother Nature.

We have mentioned Lifestyle and Diet; doesn’t Diet cover Nutrition? In today’s world of increasing toxins an adulterated food, the answer is a resounding “No!” Dietary Supplements are the only way we have to maintain a nutritional status that has a chance to deliver the foundation for true health and longevity.

Most people take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. Some people take an elaborate protocol of supplements. But it’s hard to argue against the value of a competent multi-vitamin supplement to assure that we have covered the “N” in “DLN”.

If you haven’t already, I strongly suggest that you try The Molecular Multi by Lifespan Nutrition. This supplement was formulated by Bill Sardi; one of the most brilliant and consequential figures in the field of Supplemental Nutrition. It comes in easyto-swallow capsules that can be taken at one per day, up to four per day depending on your needs. The nutrients are in the forms that promote efficient assimilation. It includes a wide array of important nutritional molecules that are rarely found in other vitamins.

For any of you who think that I may be exaggerating, I invite you to see for yourself.
